Out with the old, and in with the new....The past few weekends, there has been a noticeable change on the beach, missing was the classic nostalgic wooden lifeguard stands, but in their place, metal ones. Sea Isle has been working with Heritage Towers, of Cape May, to test these new lifeguard stands and refine the design since 2010. The new stands are made of aluminum and include wheels on the front to make it easier to move. The new stands are designed to be easier on the lifeguards, weighing much lighter than the wood ones, making it easier to move, and being more comfortable. Also, the new stands are expected to last much longer than the former wooden ones, which take a beating in the salt air and water, as well as from vandalism overnight. It is yet to be known if all the lifeguard stands will be replaced with these new stands this summer or they will be phased in over a few years, but all of the stands currently open seem to be using the new stands. The picture perfect wooden stands will be surely missed. What do you think of the new stands? Let us know in the comments below! | |

Sea Isle seems to have little regard for nostalgia, despite being a town that has hosted generations of families. I have been increasingly disappointed in the town that I have vacationed in every summer of my life, along with dozens of family members, our tradition dating back to our great-greats in early 1900's. It seems Sea Isle wants to host drunk kids anymore, not families. Sad to see more seashore tradition discarded for those ugly chairs. Since when was a chair too heavy for those ultra fit guards?

They look flimsy but roomier. I would adk the guards how they like them. They have to sit on them all day and move them back and forth.

Won't the metal heat up in the sun?

I was a lifeguard in Stone Harbor and the stands are heavy -- but aren't lifeguards supposed to be in shape anyway? As a professional photographer I was in Sea Isle recently for a family session on the beach, in terms of aesthetics, not a fan of these stands at all.
