Sea Isle City Historical Museum
If you are interested in the storms that have devastated Sea Isle over the years, the Sea Isle City Historical Museum is worth a half an hour of your vacation time. The museum is located on the first floor of the Sea Isle Library at 4800 Central Ave. They have a large collection of storm damage photos, especially from the Storm of 1962. Although largely forgotten now, this storm utterly destroyed Sea Isle and wiped blocks of houses and entire streets completely off the map. In fact the storm was so devastating that Sea Isle did not fully recover until the early 1970's.
In addition to collections of storm photos, there are facts about every aspect of Sea Isle's long history from its founding as a sea side community modeled after Venice, Italy (complete with canals) to its growth as a town much different from the vacation town it is today. Sea Isle once had it's own hospital, railroad tracks running the length of the island, and a several large beach front hotels. Sea Isle bears little resemblance to the community it was even twenty five years ago. And the Historical Museum is full of pictures of Sea Isle before it was street after street of side by side town houses. |
