Tropical Storm Hermine was down graded and moved further out to sea, so Sea Isle's weather improved all afternoon yesterday. The wind died down and you could see the sunset (picture below). Flooding at high tide never occurred and by this morning the sun was out the humidity was down and it was a perfect September morning at the beach. The only problem so far from Hermine has been beach erosion. The high tides last night and this morning were right up to the due fences in many places. And the surf was still very rough. The worst is probably yet to come as the current forecast calls for Hermine to turn to the west this evening. The high tides and flooding that were expected today are now expected on Monday. Unfortunately many people left the shore yesterday. Those that stayed are enjoying the weather and plentiful parking spaces.

Traffic has been bumper to bumper leaving Sea Isle since 10:30 am and is likely to continue into the evening as people leave ahead of Tropical Storm Hermine. Traffic at Landis Ave and JFK was all but gridlocked as in the picture below. The Garden State Parkway is bumper to bumper from south of Avalon to the Atlantic City Expressway. Businesses are still open getting all the Labor Day weekend business that they can since Sea Isle is predicted to be under water for most of the day tomorrow. However some businesses were starting to get ready. The surf has retreated quite a bit now that it is almost low tide, but the ocean is very rough and still well above its usual low tide level. There has already been a lot of beach erosion and much more is expected at high tide tonight and all day tomorrow. Sea Isle's beaches are already being hit hard with Tropical Storm Hermine still over a day away. As you can see from the video, there tide is already up very high. The eye of the storm isn't even out over the ocean yet. The storm is expected to intensify into a category 1 hurricane in the next 24 hours. The worst of flooding is expected at high tide on Sunday evening about 10:00 PM. Sea Isle City Police posted the following release regarding a strong armed robbery that took place in Sea Isle on July 21st: Press Release: Strong Armed Robbery
On Thursday July 21st 2016 at 0314hrs, Officers from the Sea Isle City Police Department responded to a residence on 300 Block of 47th Place for a report of an armed robbery. Once on scene it was learned that the suspects (described as 1 black female and 2 masked males believed to be black males based upon victims description) had produced a handgun and bound the victim to a chair in the garage. While the victim was tied up, the trio ransacked the home. Upon entering the upstairs bedroom, the suspects were confronted by the father of the victim and fled the area via unknown vehicle. The investigation into this matter is ongoing. The Cape May County Prosecutors Office along with the Cape May County Sheriff’s Department K9 Unit assisted with this ongoing investigation. You can vacation in Sea Isle for years without knowing more than the way to the beach, bars and restaurants. So here are 10 Sea Isle facts that you may not know. 1. Sea Isle City is located on Ludlam Island and was founded by Charles Landis in 1882. His original plan for Sea Isle based on Venice Italy and envisioned a town of canals. The bay front homes on 43rd Place through 47th Place and Venetian Road are a result of this initial design. (These streets would never be built today because of wet land protection regulations.) Landis was a busy guy, as he also founded Vineland NJ. 2. Sea Isle has an area of only 2.531 square miles which makes it one of the smallest south Jersey coastal municipalities. However Sea Isle is much larger than the Borough of Cape May Point which at only .3156 square miles is the smallest. Strathmere on the northern end Ludlam island is smaller than Sea Isle. But Strathmere is not an independent municipality as it is part of the much larger Upper Township. 3. Sea Isle was recorded as having 2,114 residents in the 2010 census. This is down significantly (25%) from 2000 when the census recorded 2,835 residents. However in late July and early August, Sea Isle's population soars to over 40,000. (No wonder parking is tight on the weekends.) 4. Len Desiderio has been the mayor of Sea Isle for 23 years. He started as mayor in 1993 and his current term doesn't end until 2019. Needless to say Sea Isle does not have any term limits. 5. Sea Isle has a smart phone app for buying beach tags. You still need to get the physical tags after buying the tag with your smart phone. 6. Sea Isle has no public school or parochial schools. Sea Isle's public grade school was closed a few years ago due to low enrollment and St Joseph's parish school closed quite a while ago. Sea Isle spends about $15,000 per student to send kids to the Ocean City school system. This is far less than Sea Isle was paying to keep their public school open. 7. Sea Isle's Promenade is a sea wall that was built after the storm of 1962 washed away the board walk and much of the town for that matter. 8. Sea Isle's rail line was torn up during World War II in order to supply much needed steel for the war effort. The rail line ran along what is now Pleasure Ave. 9. The streets in Sea Isle were not always numbered. Originally the streets had names like Italia, Minerva, and Paris. 10. There are 3 churches in Sea Isle, St. Joseph's RC, Sea Isle United Methodist and Trinity Non Denominational. There are 10 bars and 3 liquor stores. There are also no gas stations. The last one closed after Super Storm Sandy and never reopened.
Construction has started on the long awaited expansion of Henri's Bar in Sea Isle City. Henri's Bar located behind Braca's Café is arguably the nicest outdoor bar in Sea Isle, with a great atmosphere and full menu. The only problem is Henri's small size. The expansion will more than double the size of Henri's so space should no longer be an issue. Especially since Henri's doesn't compete with the Sand Bar at the OD, the Carrousel at the Springfield, or the LaCosta's deck bar. The old house next door to Henri's was demolished earlier this summer and the lot has been empty since then. However, this weekend the plumbers began laying the pipes for the new bar and outdoor dining area. The plans are impressive but the expansion won't be ready until late this summer.
